NURSERY LIFE Curriculum

At Broadhurst School, we believe the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) is a vital and formative part of every child’s learning journey. Our play-based curriculum is carefully designed to inspire curiosity, creativity and confidence, while providing children with the strong academic foundations they need to flourish.

We recognise that young children learn best through meaningful experiences, active exploration and warm, secure relationships. Play lies at the heart of our approach and is fundamental to children’s cognitive, social, emotional and physical development. Through a carefully planned balance of adult-led teaching, child-initiated learning and purposeful play, children develop independence, resilience, communication skills and a genuine love of learning.

Small class sizes allow teachers and teaching assistants to build strong relationships with every child, ensuring learning is responsive to individual interests, strengths and developmental needs. We place great importance on nurturing the whole child, supporting wellbeing, emotional security and self-esteem alongside academic progress.

Structured and Accelerated Learning

Our rich curriculum supports all seven areas of the EYFS framework, including:

  • Communication and Language
  • Personal, Social and Emotional Development
  • Physical Development
  • Literacy
  • Mathematics
  • Understanding the World
  • Expressive Arts and Design

As children prepare for competitive 4+ assessments, we offer an accelerated programme that develops early literacy, mathematical understanding, reasoning, language and interview confidence in a nurturing and age-appropriate way.

Alongside academic readiness, we place great importance on developing the personal qualities and characteristics that enable children to thrive both within the assessment process and beyond. We encourage children to be curious, articulate and willing to have a go, developing confidence in themselves as learners. These characteristics are embedded within everyday life at Broadhurst School and are nurtured through meaningful relationships, collaborative play, rich conversation and carefully planned learning experiences.

We believe that happy, confident and well-rounded children are best placed to succeed, and this is consistently reflected in the children we see flourishing throughout our school community.

Curriculum Enrichment

We enrich children’s experiences through specialist teaching across a wide range of subjects, including Music, Drama, Science, Cultural Studies, Yoga, Mindfulness and Physical Education. These experiences broaden children’s understanding of the world, encourage creativity and support the development of confident, well-rounded learners.

Children also benefit from educational visits and hands-on experiences linked closely to their classroom learning. We believe young children learn best through real-life, concrete experiences that bring topics to life, deepen understanding and inspire curiosity. Trips, visitors and practical experiences help children make meaningful connections with the world around them, enriching their language, imagination and understanding.

Broadhurst School has a long-established record of success with destination schools, and strong partnerships with receiving schools support each child’s smooth transition to the next stage of education. Above all, we strive to create an environment where children feel happy, valued and excited to learn – developing the confidence, curiosity, resilience and strong foundations that will serve them throughout their education and beyond.
